I believe in Math U See. I’ve seen it work with my own children and many of my friends use it. When I first began with Primer, I wasn’t sure. It was very different than the products I had taught with in public school. However, the lessons were so solid and my son was absorbing it. I promised myself I’d stick with it. I’m so happy we did. My 7 year old’s understanding of numbers and how they work together is a skill that I didn’t learn until much later in life. He truly understands numbers. It’s a beautiful thing.
So, a few months ago, when we began Beta, I was a bit nervous about him learning ‘regrouping’. Back in the day you may have also called it ‘carrying’. I recall this concept being so difficult for my students to learn when I was a teacher. It either clicked or didn’t.
However, because of the order of skills in which Mr. Demme teaches on the DVDs, learning to add multiple digit numbers was a breeze. My son had the right foundation in order to quickly understand why he was doing what he was doing.
The level of Math U See we are studying is called ‘Beta‘ and covers:
- Place Value
- Rounding and Estimation
- Multiple-Digit Addition
- Addition with Regrouping
- Skip counting, specifically with nickels.
- Money (adding, mental math, decimal points)
- Column Addition
- Place-Value Notation
- Multiple Digit column adiition
- Multiple-Digit Subtraction
- Telling Time
- Ordinal Numbers
- Tally Marks
- Subtraction (Four-Digit Numbers, Money, Multiple-Digit Numbers)
- Reading Gauges and Thermometers
- Bar and Line Graphs
Many of these skills have been covered partially in Primer and Alpha and are extended upon in Beta.
