Our Curriculum Choices 2012-2013

Here’s a rundown of everything I’m using as well as links. I’ll continue to update you on how I’m liking all the curriculum I’m using throughout the year!

Our main curriculum is Sonlight.  This is a package/box program I bought for my oldest who just started Kindergarten.  We used their Pre-K program last year, which is much less intense than the Kindergarten program and I loved the Instructor’s Guides, phone/forum support and the overall feel of the program.  Our Sonlight curriculum includes:

  • Bible:  This is a Christian-based company and I LOVE their view of Bible curriculum and study.  They do NOT shelter a child from various events in history or various world views.  The Instructor’s Guides lay out talking points to discuss with your student at your discretion regarding controversial Biblical events and timelines.  My greatest desire as an educator and follower of Christ is for my child to firmly believe in his or her faith while respecting other beliefs, while affirming their own.  Even at the Kindergarten level, Sonlight does this.  Each day there is a bible reading and each week there is a new bible memory verse set to song.  My boys (and I!) are easily memorizing the verses to the catchy tunes off the cd they include.  Click HERE to buy Sing the World from A to Z off Amazon.
  • History:  Through the use of Encyclopedias both in print and online, as well as other included books and activities, we study the history of the world, cultures, and the planet.  Christian aspects are woven in throughout and you can choose to include those conversations or not.
  • Language Arts:  Phonetic awareness and various ‘basic’ skills are introduced during the Kindergarten year.  I enjoy the LA aspect of the curriculum but I do supplement with other materials which I’ll mention below.
  • Science:  I really hesitated ordering our science curriculum through Sonlight because I’d heard of MANY other companies that had rave reviews.  However, I can say with certainty that Sonlight’s science curriculum is EXCELLENT.  The lessons and experiment DVD are top notch and my sons love it.
  • Read AloudsSonlight’s curriculum also comes with TONS of excellent read-alouds that build comprehension, vocabulary, and that are just plain fun.  My son is loving The Boxcar Children series right now.

Math:  We are using Math-U-See, which no doubt you’ve heard about if you’ve googled anything pertaining to homeschooling.  We started it this spring and my son is now nearly finished with the Primer book and we’ll most like be ready for the Alpha book come October 1st.  Math is his forte.  Gotta love homeschooling and moving at your own pace!

Handwriting:  I ordered our handwriting curriculum through Sonlight.  We are using A Reason For Handwriting.  I chose this over Handwriting Without Tears.  I *think* we like it?  I’m not sure.  It’s very basic so far.  Which, for my son is good, as he LOATHES handwriting.  However, I think that some of the dexterity skills that Handwriting Without Tears included may have been batter for him.  Sonlight does have a “Love to Learn” guarantee and you can return items up to 1 YEAR after purchase.  I *might* consider this option.  I’ll keep you posted.

Supplemental/Hodge Podge/I can’t decide what I want to use/I’m a school supply addict:

Hooked On Phonics (Pre-K for my 3.5 year old and Kinder version for my 5.5 year old)

Skip and Daisy Learn the Alphabet for my 3.5 year old.  You can see my review for this product over at Hip Homeschool Moms.

ABCmouse.com for my 3.5 year old and 5.5. year old.  We’ve subscribed to this for about 9 months.  They are starting to lose interest so we’ll probably stop the subscription soon.  However, it’s a good way to keep one of them busy while I do one on one time with the other.

That’s what we use for now.  Of course I do a lot of extra arts and crafts and hands on morning work with them too.  These are ideas from back when I was teaching as well as Pintrest and other homeschooling blogs.
