Stewed Cabbage

Wait! Stewed Cabbage does NOT sound appetizing, I know. But stick around…there’s bacon involved! If you just hate cabbage…then you’re outta luck!

This is one of my momma’s recipes she always made when I was little. I remember always liking it as a kid. My boys like it…not love it. My husband and I LOVE it. Hope you do too!

Here’s the low-down, in photos!

I use a cabbage, about 6-7 slices of bacon, some vegetable oil or crisco, and salt and pepper.

Slice up your bacon into 1 inch strips…

Chop up the cabbage. I don’t use the very core. Medium side chunks is what you’re going for. You can’t really mess this up.

You’ll need a large pot for this recipe.  Use a teaspoon or two of oil or shortening to fry your bacon. You can forgo the oil if you want, but my bacon was a little lean, and you need some fat for a good result :)

Fry is until crispy….I probably could have left this for a few more minutes….

Throw the cabbage right on top of the already fried bacon…

Salt and pepper to your liking and begin mixing and letting all the pieces of cabbage saute with the bacon. This will take a good 5-7 minutes.

Once the cabbage is slightly tender, add about 1 cup of water, until it rises about 1 inch in the pot.

Cover. Let cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15-25 minutes. Some folks like a crunch to their cabbage. I like it mushy. Your call!

Ta Da! Delish! Serve with anything, or eat it on its own!
